Thousand Pieces of Gold
1990, 105 mins, PG-13
Lalu (Rosalind Chao) is a young Mongolian woman who, in the 1880’s, is sold to a marriage broker by her father. She’s shipped to America, traded from one man to another, rebelling and adapting to the treatment she is encountering. Ending up in the gold fields of Oregon, Lalu (now known as Polly) finally meets her liberator (Chris Cooper)—as a prize in a frontier card game. Unique Western, based on the lives of actual people, unfolds from a Chinese woman’s point of view, realistically depicting various relationships occurring in a very hostile environment. Made on a shoestring budget, it exudes the look of an expensive production.
