The Woman King
2022, 135 min, PG-13
In the 1820s, The Agojie were an elite team of female warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey. They were fashioned by a formidable leader (Viola Davis) into a skilled, fierce (and feared) brigade that battled a territorial enemy and European slave traders. Here’s an action-packed historical epic fortified by meaningful commentary about slavery, colonialism and sexual abuse. Davis is tremendous—giving one of the best performances of her storied career.
