The Way We Were
1973, 118 min, PG
50th Anniversary Screening! “Mem’ries…” Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford made unbeatable screen chemistry in one of the most popular romantic films ever made. Streisand plays a fiery campus radical and Redford, a popular jock with hidden writing talent. Their romance blossoms in New York during the war years, but develops growing pains during the Communist witch hunts when writer Redford sells out to Hollywood and wife Streisand becomes a political liability. This heartbreak romance of opposites was a huge hit in 1973, aided by director Sydney Pollack’s nostalgic recreation of greatest generation America. Arthur Laurents (West Side Story, The Turning Point) wrote the script for Barbra (Oscar nominated for Best Actress) based on memories of a college friend he knew at Cornell in the late 1930s. Marvin Hamlish won two Oscars for his uber-hit theme song and score. Cast includes James Woods, Lois Chiles, Bradford Dillman.
