The Holdovers

New England, 1970. A universally unpopular teacher (Paul Giamatti) at an elite boy’s boarding school gets stuck watching over students who cannot go home for the holidays. He forms an unlikely bond with a brainy, challenging 15-year-old (Dominic Sessa) and the school’s cook (Da’Vine Joy Randolph)–who has just lost a son in Vietnam. While lighthearted on the surface, director Alexander Payne’s charming film is solidly imbued with poignant themes which make it extraordinarily thoughtful.
