An aspiring toy designer from El Salvador (Julio Torres) is constantly chasing employers for a work visa in order to attain his off-kilter version of the American dream. Currently he has linked up with a part-time art critic and full-time volatile screwball (Tilda Swinton). Torres succeeds admirably as a triple threat here—the writer, director and star of this original comedy about an immigrant’s whimsical journey through bureaucratic hellscapes and the bizarre NYC art scene. Isabella Rossellini’s narration lends the activity a sweet gravity.
