A rookie FBI Agent (Maika Monroe) seeks to uncover and stop a diabolical force (Nicolas Cage) which has been motivating fathers to slay their families. Bizarrely, her investigation produces a personal connection with this menace that she can’t quite figure out—raising questions about her sanity. Writer/director Oz Perkins doesn’t resort to “jump-scare” moments, establishing instead a palpable fear that what you are witnessing is going to get more creepy, moody and disturbing. Cage delivers stunning villainy and Monroe scores splendidly, too.
