Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) is an 11-year-old girl navigating a move from New York City to the New Jersey suburbs and making a rocky transition from childhood to womanhood. Judy Blume’s refreshingly frank story, although set in 1970, feels totally current and relatable today. This terrific adaptation has a picture-perfect cast which includes Rachel McAdams (as an all-time-great movie mom) and Kathy Bates (as the scene-stealing grandmother). It’s a marvelous film which families can watch together before having a pertinent conversation on the way home from the theater.
