Flailing teacher and novelist Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), frustrated by the success of novels containing one dimensional views of the Black experience, decides to write an outlandish parody filled with Black stereotypes he loathes. To his dismay, the book (written under an assumed name) becomes a cultural phenomenon and best seller. Here’s a razor-sharp, sophisticated satire about race, media and identity politics which includes a tender look at family dynamics and gives Jeffrey Wright another chance to demonstrate he’s a sensational actor.
