Poland, 1943. Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, lives with his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) and 5 children in an idyllic home next to the camp. Only a few “inconveniences” disturb the routine nature of their household. Director Jonathan Glazer, skillfully choosing what to show and what not to show, stunningly generates from this situation the attitude of a population that was ignoring what was taking place. It’s a cautionary tale–given the divisiveness and violence re-emerging currently around the world.
